Plan Outlines University's Commitment to Sustainability
May 27, 2010 -- This month the Sustainability Advisory Committee, with assistance from the Office of Energy and Sustainability, published the University’s first-ever Climate Action Plan.
The Plan outlines YU’s commitment to sustainability with a list of initiatives to lower green house gas (GHG) emissions, setting 2050 as a long-term goal for climate neutrality. This report marks the final major deliverable required by the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment signed by President Richard M. Joel in 2007.
The University has already made significant progress since the Office of Energy and Sustainability began in 2008 with initiatives such as GHG emissions tracking, Recyclemania participation, a dorm energy-saving competition, an environmentally preferable procurement policy and a 100 percent hybrid passenger vehicle fleet. The initial goal of a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 will require YU to continue making progress towards a more sustainable future.
