YU Athletics Racks Up Awards

Avigail Varnai, Martin Leibovich, Elizabeth Penn and Chana Gila Ovits Earn All-Conference Honors; Dr. Jonathan Halpert Named Coach of the Year; Lady Macs Win Sportsmanship Award Their regular seasons may be over, but both the men's and women's basketball programs, as well as two fencers, have waged a successful awards season campaign. • Avigail Varnai was selected to the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) All-Conference team. Also announced last night were the Skyline awards, where the teams voted the Yeshiva Lady Macs as the conference’s Sportsmanship Award winner. Read the full story here. • The Skyline released the results from the All-Conference voting, and Martin Leibovich was a top six vote getter and one of the five first team All-Conference members. The other coaches in the conference also voted Coach Halpert as the Coach of the Year, after a season where the Macs defeated the Skyline Champions twice during the regular season, along with the regular season champs and runners-up (Westbury and St. Josephs). Elizabeth Penn placed sixth overall with 10 victories and six losses, while Chana Gila Ovits placed ninth with eight victories and eight losses. Read the full story here.
