Snow, dean of Sy Syms School of Business. “New financial techniques emanating from the multinational nature of business and other factors have greatly increased the complexity of business dealings. As a result, business schools need to provide more formal education if the accounting profession is to keep up with the complexities.” Dr. Snow illustrated his point by displaying a current two-volume edition of the Financial Accounting Standards Board bo ok of pronouncements, a bible of the accounting industry. Both books are more than 500-pages thick. “In my day, the standards book was not even half as thick as just one of these volumes,” Dean Snow said. For Sy Syms School of Business to award a master’s in accounting, it had to submit an application to the New York State Education Department’s Office of Higher Education for approval, which the school received this past December. “That we are now empowered to grant the MS in accounting to our students is a tremendous compliment to the quality of our course offerings. We see this as a testament to our institution’s academic standing,” Dr. Snow said. Students entering as freshman in 2004 and planning to major in accounting will become the first to receive a master’s degree from one of YU’s three undergraduate colleges. Dr. Snow and Dr. Joel A. Hochman, Philip H. Cohen Professor of Accounting, worked together in preparing the 32-page curriculum proposal that resulted in the School’s master’s program. Dr. Hochman said the new curriculum puts accounting on par with other professions. “The accounting profession wants to upgrade its entry- level people,” Dr. Hochman said. “With a master’s degree as part of their education, Sy Syms students will be well-prepared to tackle whatever comes their way professionally.”
