Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. to Speak at Cardozo Commencement
Mar 15, 2010 -- Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance, Jr., will be the featured speaker at the 32nd commencement of the Benjamin N. At the ceremony, which will be held at Avery Fisher Hall of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, close to 400 will receive J.D. degrees. LL.M degrees will also be awarded.
Cardozo Dean Matthew Diller said upon announcing District Attorney Vance’s upcoming address, “It is a privilege to have Mr. Vance join us at commencement and speak to the graduates. He holds one of the most important law enforcement jobs in the nation and one that is critical to our community. He is already making his mark on behalf of New York’s citizens and is sure to inform and inspire this new generation of attorneys.”
Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., became District Attorney of New York County on January 1, 2010. A graduate of Yale University and Georgetown University Law School, District Attorney Vance is a recognized leader in criminal justice reform with a focus on crime prevention. Mr. Vance has served for over a quarter century in the courts, in his community, and in government. He became a prosecutor under Robert Morgenthau during the high-crime era of the 1980s. In the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, he handled cases involving murder, organized crime, career criminals, political corruption, and white-collar crime. Mr. Vance went on to co-found McNaul Ebel Nawrot Helgren & Vance, PLLC, which under his joint leadership became one of the pre-eminent litigation firms in the Northwest. He also taught trial advocacy as an adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law.
Mr. Vance returned to New York in 2004 and became a partner at Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason, Anello & Bohrer, P.C. Mr. Vance is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He served by appointment of the Governor of New York as a member of the New York State Appellate Division, First Department, Judicial Screening Panel, and was a member of the New York State Commission on Sentencing Reform. Mr. Vance previously served as a member of the Criminal Justice Council of the New York City Bar Association, the Federal Bar Council, and the New York Council of Defense Lawyers. He was a member of the Boards of Directors of the Fund for Modern Courts, the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, and the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation.
