Dec 1, 2008 -- It was a night full of jokes for a serious cause when over 300 students from several universities in New York City attended a comedy night fundraiser for Camp HASC, the summer program run by the Hebrew Academy for Special Children. The event in on YU’s Wilf Campus raised $4068 through student donations and ticket sales.
“It was amazing how many people came out to support this incredible organization,” said Eden Glaser, co-president of the Chessed Club, the on-campus group that organized the event.
Camp HASC provides over 300 mentally and physically handicapped children and adults with an opportunity to enjoy a seven-week sleep-away camp experience in the Catskills. The money raised at the YU event will enable children who cannot afford the camp fees to attend the program and will also fund the construction of the Stevie Newman Sensory Room, a specially designed room for sensory-impaired children dedicated to the memory of a child who passed away this past summer.
Students from Yeshiva College, Stern College for Women and New York University were among the comedians who performed. Many of the jokes revolved around the themes of cultural and social differences between Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jews, stereotypes about Jews who hail from the New York area, and Israeli culture.
Jason Steinberg, a budding amateur comedian, drew a Jewish parallel to the famed television superhero, Captain Planet: “A Jew who can graduate law school in one semester, file taxes quicker than a speeding bullet, and have X-ray vision for retirement communities in Florida.”
“I am thrilled that I was able to perform at the event,” Eli Lebowicz, a sophomore at Yeshiva College, said. “I am glad so many people came for this great cause.”
